Senator JD Vance shed light on former President Donald Trump’s stance on abortion in a recent interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation”. When questioned about Trump’s view on the issue, Vance emphasized that it has been “very clear” and has been discussed on multiple occasions.
Margaret Brennan, the host of the show, pointed out that both Vance and Trump supported the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on mifepristone, a medication used in the majority of abortions in the United States. Brennan asked whether a Trump-Vance administration would use the FDA to block access to the drug.
Vance responded by reiterating Trump’s stance that abortion policy should be decided by individual states. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that any medication is safe and prescribed correctly, but ultimately, the decision should be left to the states. Vance noted that different states will have varying abortion policies, citing California, Ohio, and Alabama as examples.
Vance further explained that Trump’s approach is to respect the decisions made by states and their voters, rather than imposing a federal solution. He emphasized the need to move away from the “culture war” aspect of the abortion issue and instead focus on supporting families.
In terms of family policy, Vance highlighted Trump’s goals of making it easier for families to start and raise children. This includes reducing housing costs, expanding the child tax credit, and making healthcare more affordable. Vance believes that by addressing these issues, it will become easier for people to choose life.
The conversation comes after Trump recently pushed back against the abortion policy recommendations outlined in Project 2025, a project of The Heritage Foundation. Trump distanced himself from the project’s views, stating that they are “too severe” and “way too far”. He emphasized that he has returned the issue of abortion to the states and the people, allowing them to make their own decisions through voting.
