A video captured the tragic moment when two people were struck by lightning on a beach in western Mexico. According to municipal authorities interviewed by Spanish news outlet Marca, the victims were a tourist and a hammock seller. Tragically, a woman was killed instantly while a man later passed away while receiving medical care.

The National Weather Service states that the odds of being struck by lightning in one’s lifetime are 1-in-15,300, with almost 90 percent of survivors. Men are four times more likely to be struck by lightning than women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The local mayor expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advises people caught in a thunderstorm to seek shelter immediately upon hearing thunder or seeing lightning, and to remain indoors for 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.
