Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) emerged as the top choice among voters at Turning Point Action’s “People’s Convention” to serve as former President Donald Trump’s vice president. The straw poll pitted Vance against other potential running mates, including Senators Tim Scott (R-SC) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), as well as Governor Doug Burgum (R-ND).
Kirk, a Turning Point Action representative, praised Vance, stating that he has consistently been one of Trump’s most capable and articulate defenders and surrogates. Kirk noted that Vance’s message and appeal resonate with critical voting blocs, particularly in the Midwest.
Ashley Etienne, former communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris, described Vance as posing the greatest threat to Harris during debates. Etienne praised Vance’s intelligence, sharpness, and quick wit.

Vance won Ohio’s open U.S. Senate race in November 2022, defeating his Democratic opponent, former Representative Tim Ryan. His campaign focused on an economic nationalist vision to revive America’s manufacturing base through tariffs and a strict industrial policy.
As a vocal supporter of Trump, Vance has been critical of the former president’s January 6, 2021, actions, describing the idea that Trump endangered lives as “absurd.” After Trump’s guilty verdict from a Manhattan jury in May, Vance stated that Trump’s business records trial was the “definition of fascism.”
