Turkey Imposes Trade Embargo on Israel

0:00

Islamist Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Friday that Ankara will halt all imports and exports with Israel in solidarity with Hamas. Erdogan criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of targeting Palestinian civilians during the conflict with Hamas. Erdogan defended Hamas, calling them “mujahideen defending their lands” and comparing Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler.

The Turkish Trade Ministry declared the suspension of trade with Israel, insisting on uninterrupted humanitarian aid flow to Gaza before resuming trade. This move came after initial restrictions on trade between the two countries in April. Israel responded by urging private entities to limit business with Turkey.

Erdogan’s government has shown strong support for Hamas, hosting the political leader in Istanbul and declaring to be the voice of the oppressed Palestinian people. Turkey also plans to join a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice for alleged genocide.

Overall, Erdogan’s actions have escalated tensions between Turkey and Israel, with both countries imposing trade barriers and engaging in verbal sparring.
