Following Saturday’s assassination attempt, former President Donald Trump has altered his speech for the convention in Milwaukee, shifting its focus from criticism of President Biden’s policies to national unity.

Trump expressed his initial speech would have been a “humdinger,” attacking President Biden’s policies, but after the attempted assassination, he sees an opportunity to “bring the country together.” He emphasized the speech will be vastly different from what it would have been two days prior.

Trump attributed his narrow escape to God, saying “it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.” He also stated on Truth Social that the incident did not instill fear in him, but rather resilience in his faith.

During an interview with the Washington Examiner‘s Salena Zito, Trump revealed that his decision to glance away from the crowd and at a screen displaying border data may have saved his life. The 45th president shared that the iconic image of him raising his fist with blood on his face was intended to reassure his supporters that he was unharmed.
