Trump Campaign Claims Internal Communications Hacked by ‘Foreign Sources Hostile to the US’

The Trump campaign has alleged that its internal communications were compromised by foreign entities hostile to the United States, according to a recent report. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung confirmed to Politico that sensitive documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources deemed hostile to the nation.

The documents, which were sent to the outlet from an anonymous account, included a research dossier on Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), Trump’s pick for vice president, as well as a portion of a research document on Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).

Cheung stated that the documents were obtained with the intention of interfering with the 2024 election and sowing chaos throughout the democratic process. The alleged hacking incident coincides with a recent report from Microsoft, which found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a high-ranking official on a U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024.

Microsoft’s nine-page report revealed that the company had been tracking activity that increasingly points to Iran’s intent to influence the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The report discussed activities by several groups with connections to the Iranian government, including one group that sent a spear phishing email to a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign from the compromised email account of a former senior advisor.

Cheung added that the alleged hacking incident is further evidence of Iran’s attempts to undermine Trump’s campaign, stating that “the Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House.”

The alleged hacking incident comes on the heels of a potential assassination plot on Trump by Iran, which was revealed by U.S. officials in July. The Department of Justice recently announced the arrest and charging of a Pakistani man with alleged connections to Iran in connection to a potential plot to assassinate Trump and several other U.S. officials.
