Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) inadvertently paid thousands of dollars from his campaign to place ads in a Chinese-owned newspaper registered as a foreign agent. Suozzi, who has been vocal about China’s persecution of Uyghur ethnic minorities, expressed concern over the influence of the Chinese Communist Party. The newspaper in question, a subsidiary of Sing Tao U.S., was forced to register as a foreign agent by the Biden administration.

Suozzi claims he was unaware of the affiliation with the Chinese Communist Party and is now reviewing the situation. He emphasized the need to be cautious of the CCP’s efforts to manipulate information and disinformation in society. The congressman’s opponent, Mike LiPetri, criticized Suozzi for the payments, suggesting that they supported China and its human rights violations.

Other lawmakers have also paid for advertising in the same Chinese-owned newspaper, raising concerns among foreign policy experts. The issue highlights the need for campaigns to be more vigilant about partnering with foreign government-controlled entities. As the CCP continues its influence campaign in the U.S., it is crucial for candidates to understand the risks associated with such partnerships.
