President Joe Biden claimed on Saturday that his recent debate performance, marred by numerous gaffes and stumbles, actually won over more undecided voters than former President Donald Trump’s performance in a similar debate. During a fundraiser in New Jersey, Biden maintained that his struggles during the 90-minute debate impressed undecided voters, despite widespread criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.
Biden cited research showing that his campaign converted more undecided voters than Trump’s did following his debate, largely due to Trump’s behavior on January 6. The President claimed that people remember the negative aspects of Trump’s presidency.
First Lady Jill Biden also downplayed the significance of her husband’s poor debate performance, saying that he told her he didn’t feel well during the event. However, this contradicts his numerous public mishaps in the past, raising concerns about his mental acuity and fitness for office.
Following the debate, political pollster Frank Luntz conducted a focus group of undecided voters, who overwhelmingly expressed their support for Trump. Ten out of 14 participants raised their hands when asked if they were more convinced to vote for Trump, with Luntz noting that he had never witnessed a focus group reach such a conclusive outcome.
Democrat National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison dismissed doubts about Biden’s ability to continue in the race, insisting that the public still supports the President. Harrison pointed to increased galvanization of support in the Black community, saying that he has witnessed this firsthand as a Black man.
