South Africa urges international court to halt Israel’s invasion of Rafah

South Africa is urging the International Court of Justice to intervene to prevent Israel from launching a full-scale invasion of Rafah. The court held a hearing in response to South Africa’s request for further constraints on Israel. South Africa’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Vusi Madonsela, accused Israel of escalating attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, violating the court’s orders. Israel will have an opportunity to address the court in the upcoming days.

These proceedings are part of South Africa’s case alleging genocide by Israel against Palestinians. Earlier, the court instructed Israel to do more to protect Palestinian civilians in Gaza, but did not call for a ceasefire. Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have refuted accusations of genocide, arguing that Israel has a right to self-defense.

The United States and other governments have opposed a full Israeli invasion of Rafah, where over a million Palestinians have sought refuge. Limited operations have been conducted, resulting in the displacement of approximately 600,000 people since May 6. Critics claim that Israel’s actions in Rafah are aimed at destroying Gaza and its population.

The conflict has reportedly led to the deaths of around 35,000 people, according to the Gaza health ministry. Madonsela reiterated South Africa’s commitment to seeking justice under the Genocide Convention, citing the devastation in Gaza. Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces have killed thousands of terrorists and civilians.

Hamas’s use of civilian areas for military purposes complicates the situation, as Israel must weigh the risk to civilians when targeting Hamas operatives.
