Bolivia: Socialists Remove Evo Morales as Party Leader Following Threat of Mob Violence

0:00

The ruling party in Bolivia, the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), recently removed former President Evo Morales from party leadership, following a power struggle with the current President Luis Arce. Morales, who was term-limited from running for president again, has faced controversies during his time in power, including allegations of promoting cocaine production and engaging in inappropriate relationships.

After resigning in 2019 due to election fraud accusations, Morales continued to challenge the constitution to run for president again in 2025. However, the MAS party ousted him and elected a new president, Grover García, signaling a shift in leadership. The rift between Morales and Arce has divided the party, with accusations of using the party for personal gain.

Despite Morales’ attempts to influence the upcoming election, the party is focused on redefining its direction and moving forward without his leadership. García emphasized unity and condemned Morales’ threats of protests. The political landscape in Bolivia remains tense, with competing factions within the MAS party vying for control and influence.
