Gunmen from the Sinaloa Cartel have been causing chaos and terror in the state of Zacatecas over the past four days. They have been dumping bodies, torching vehicles, and clashing with authorities. Government officials believe that this violence is connected to the recent killing of a local cartel leader.
The most recent incidents occurred on Wednesday morning in Zacatecas, where bodies were found in the town of Morelos. Gunmen also blocked a main highway, stole tractor-trailers, and placed road spikes. The exact number of bodies discovered is unknown, but there have been more than ten bodies dumped in various parts of the state since Sunday.
The violence in Zacatecas is linked to the arrests of over 26 cartel gunmen and the death of a regional boss for the Sinaloa Cartel. These gunmen, primarily from Sinaloa and Durango, have been engaged in a turf war with rival criminal groups. Authorities in Zacatecas allege that the captured gunmen have been involved in numerous murders and abductions.
The violence began on Sunday and has continued through Monday with shootouts, blockades, and arrests. According to reports, during the initial shootout on Sunday, authorities killed a cartel member known as El Gordo. Governor David Monreal Avila of Zacatecas has stated that the recent violence is a response from organized crime to effective police work aimed at restoring peace in the region.
