According to a report by Toronto Star contributor Shaquille Morgan, firearm-related crime is on the rise in heavily gun-controlled Canada. In 2022, Canadian police reported 9,198 victims of gun-related crime, marking a 10 percent increase from 2021 and a 60 percent increase from 2013.
Morgan highlighted that 63 percent of gun-related homicides in Canada were committed with handguns. Despite Canada’s strict gun control measures, including expanded background checks, a ban on 1,500 models of assault weapons, a national handgun freeze, and a $250 million commitment to address gun and gang violence, the problem persists.
The handgun freeze prohibits the sale, purchase, or transfer of handguns within Canada, as well as bringing newly acquired handguns into the country. To legally own a gun in Canada, individuals must obtain a license, which includes completing an approved gun safety course.
