Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) expressed concerns about former President Donald Trump’s proposal to cover IVF procedures, either through government funding or insurance mandates, during an appearance on NewsNation’s “The Hill” on Friday. According to McCormick, such a plan would either result in the government footing the bill for costly elective procedures, which he believes is outside its purview, or lead to increased insurance premiums.
McCormick argued that IVF procedures fall under the category of elective procedures, which should not be the government’s responsibility. Drawing a parallel with abortion, he stated that he does not want the government to cover the costs of pregnancies or associated procedures, emphasizing that these expenses are substantial. He also warned that mandating insurance companies to cover IVF would ultimately lead to higher premiums, which would be borne by consumers. McCormick acknowledged the significance of IVF for those seeking to conceive, but maintained that the government oversteps its constitutional authority by intervening in such personal matters.
