Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) called for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race on CNN’s “The Source”, citing the president’s lack of a winning trajectory. Himes stated that he couldn’t envision a path to victory, citing the numbers and polls.
Host Kaitlan Collins asked if Himes believed Biden would lose to Donald Trump if the two faced off. Himes replied that he only focused on the current numbers and pointed out that no president has ever won with a 37% approval rating. He also emphasized that the race is not decided by a few swing states, but by a broader geographic area.
Himes continued, expressing concerns about the trajectory of the campaign. He suggested that if Biden performed poorly in the next few months, it would be a risk to continue the campaign. “What is the trajectory look like?” he asked. “Imagine that three months from now, we get another performance like there was in the debate right before the election. Do you want to take that risk? I don’t.”
Himes also lamented the potential legacy implications of Biden’s campaign, stating that the president is a “top ten” American leader and that it would be foolish to risk his legacy by continuing the campaign.
