Rep. Garamendi Defends Harris on Border Record, Blasts Trump for Killing Bipartisan Bill

In a recent appearance on NewsNation’s “The Hill,” Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) came to the defense of 2024 Democratic presidential hopeful Vice President Kamala Harris, asserting that she effectively carried out her duties regarding the border.

Garamendi argued that Harris has a strong case to make on border issues, dismissing the notion that she failed as a border czar. He pointed out that her specific task was to engage with Central American countries, where she successfully secured $5 billion in funding and achieved a significant decrease in asylum seekers fleeing those countries. According to Garamendi, Harris accomplished what was expected of her in this regard.

Looking ahead, Garamendi acknowledged that immigration will remain a contentious issue. However, he contended that Republicans, particularly former President Donald Trump, are vulnerable on this topic. Garamendi recalled that a bipartisan bill aimed at addressing border security, including funding for border guards and streamlined processes for asylum seekers, was torpedoed by Trump. This move, Garamendi claimed, will come back to haunt Trump in future debates, as Harris will likely confront him about his decision to kill the bill, which could have made significant strides in resolving the border crisis.
