Maryland, a state with multiple sanctuary jurisdictions, has seen a record number of arrests of illegal alien sex offenders over the past year. The latest figures, announced by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Friday, bring the total to 153.
The latest arrest involves 36-year-old Madai Gamaliel Amaya, a Honduran national who was taken into custody in Montgomery Village in August. Amaya has a history of sex crimes, having been convicted of second-degree rape in Montgomery County in 2009. He was subsequently deported by ICE in 2013, but managed to re-enter the country and was deported again in 2018.
Undeterred, Amaya crossed the border for a third time and made his way back to Maryland, where he was arrested by ICE agents in August. He is currently being held in custody pending deportation.
The alarming trend of illegal alien sex offenders in Maryland is not limited to Amaya’s case. A recent investigation by FOX45 News found that in Baltimore County, nearly 10% of child sex crime cases involved illegal aliens from Central America who received lenient sentences from circuit court judges. One such case is that of 19-year-old Henry Argueta-Tobar, a Guatemalan national who was convicted of second-degree rape in July.
Despite being sentenced to 20 years in prison and five years of supervised release, Argueta-Tobar’s sentence was suspended, with the court ordering him to serve only 190 days. This leniency has raised concerns about the handling of sex crimes involving illegal aliens in Maryland’s judicial system.
