Progressive Democrats are showing support for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) as she faces a censure resolution for alleged antisemitic remarks, with many labeling the effort as “Islamophobic.”
The Congressional Progressive Caucus leaders, Chairwoman Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Whip Greg Casar (D-TX), released a statement on Wednesday condemning the censure as a “political stunt.” They expressed full support for Omar, emphasizing her valuable leadership within the Progressive Caucus.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) filed a resolution accusing Omar of promoting antisemitism after comments she made at Columbia University. Omar suggested that some Jewish students were “pro-genocide.” Bacon stated that the House must condemn Omar’s remarks and those who defend her actions.
This is not the first time Omar has faced censure threats. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) was censured previously for pro-Palestinian comments. Tlaib blamed the approval of a foreign aid package to Israel for potential atrocities in Rafah.
Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar (D-CA) disagreed with Tlaib’s statements and also criticized Omar’s recent comments. Aguilar emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful tone in public discourse.
The Truth Voices attempted to reach out to Bacon for comment.
