Pro-Palestinian Protesters Block Traffic in NYC for Nakba Day

Pro-Palestinian activists in Queens, New York, staged a protest to observe “Nakba Day,” accusing Israel of causing harm to Palestinian culture and society in 1948. Waving Palestinian flags and setting off colored smoke bombs, they chanted slogans like “Our Street” and “Free Palestine.” The protesters defied orders to stay on the sidewalk, running and evading police.

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib recently stirred controversy by commemorating the Nakba as a “catastrophe” that led to Israel’s establishment. Pro-Palestinian groups have alleged ethnic cleansing and genocide by Israel in 1948, while Israel claims it was fighting for independence against aggressive forces. There are concerns that Israel’s response to recent attacks in Gaza could result in another Nakba.

Universities across the US have become hotspots for pro-Palestinian demonstrations and anti-Israel sentiments, leading to clashes with authorities and allegations of taking over private property. Columbia University saw protesters smashing windows and barricading themselves inside a building in a video that went viral.
