Voters are split regarding the conviction of former President Donald Trump, with half believing the convictions are justified and nearly as many thinking they are politically driven.

A new ABC News/Ipsos poll reveals that the percentage of people who think Trump should withdraw due to his legal problems remains almost the same as in April last year after his initial indictment. In this recent poll, 49% believe he should bow out because of his conviction, compared to 48% in April 2023.

The poll also indicates that 50% of the public believes Trump’s conviction was justified. Among those surveyed, 47% think the charges against him are politically driven, while only 35% disagree.

Regarding the specifics of the charge, 51% believe Trump knowingly committed an illegal act; 12% think he did something wrong unintentionally, and 19% believe he did nothing wrong at all.

Opinions are highly divided along party lines, with 83% of Democrats agreeing with the verdict and 79% thinking he should drop out. In contrast, only 16% of Republicans agree with the verdict, while an identical percentage believe he should step aside. Independents are nearly evenly split, with 52% believing the verdict was correct and favoring that Trump should drop out.

Last Thursday, Trump made history by becoming the first U.S. president to be convicted of a felony. He was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted from May 31 to June 1, surveying 781 random U.S. adults with a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.
