Law enforcement officials started clearing an anti-Israel encampment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The University of Wisconsin Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, removed the encampment after giving protesters multiple warnings to leave peacefully. Individuals who did not comply were cited or arrested.
The encampment was set up on campus grounds on Monday and was eventually cleared by police. Despite the removal, a new encampment was established shortly after. Students at UW-Madison began sitting on the lawn and chanting in protest.
Among the protesters was Sami Schalk, an associate professor at UW-Madison, who was detained by law enforcement officials. She claimed to have been injured during the altercation with police.
Police spokesperson Marc Lovicott clarified that camping on campus was the issue, not protesting. The removal of the encampment at UW-Madison parallels similar actions taken by law enforcement at other universities, such as Columbia University, where anti-Israel protesters were also removed from a building they had seized earlier.
Since then, similar encampments have been established at various universities across the country, including Harvard University, Rutgers University, George Washington University, and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
