The Euclid Police Department is grieving the loss of a young officer who was killed in the line of duty. Officer Jacob Derbin, a 23-year-old military veteran set to marry this summer, was tragically shot and killed after responding to a disturbance call on East 211th Street in Euclid.

Derbin joined the force just nine months ago after serving in the Army National Guard. He was ambushed and killed by the suspect as he rounded a corner in the backyard of a home. The suspect, Deshawn Vaughn, was heavily armed and with a violent criminal history. Vaughn, 24, had previously spent time in prison for felonious assault and gun-related charges.

After an intense manhunt lasting nearly 18 hours, Vaughn was eventually located in an apartment in Shaker Heights. He fired at drones sent in by law enforcement before ultimately taking his own life. Police Chief Scott Meyer noted the danger posed by individuals like Vaughn, emphasizing the need to address such threats swiftly and decisively.

The Euclid community, particularly Derbin’s family, colleagues, and fellow officers, are mourning his loss and honoring his service to his city and country. Despite the tragic outcome, the community has come together to support and remember Officer Jacob Derbin.
