The prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City saw over 2,500 dogs competing in 2024, with one long-time competitor emerging as the winner.

Sage, a miniature poodle from Houston, Texas, and her handler Kaz Hosaka celebrated their victory at the 148th annual Westminster competition. This was also the 45th and final time that Kaz competed at Westminster, making the win even more special.

Hosaka expressed his excitement and pride in Sage’s performance, calling it a great moment for him.

The competition started on May 11 and culminated in a final face-off after various rounds of competition.

Sage, an all-black poodle, represented the non-sporting group in the last round and was awarded “best in show.”

In the runner-up position was a German Shepherd named Mercedes, handled by Kent Boyles from Bethesda, Maryland. Mercedes also secured the second place in the 2023 Westminster show.

However, the event was not without controversy, as an animal rights activist was arrested for trying to disrupt the show with a sign urging viewers to boycott breeders. The protester was quickly intercepted and taken into custody along with two other demonstrators.
