A mass shooting in Rochester, New York, has left one person dead and six others wounded, authorities confirmed Sunday.
The incident unfolded at Maplewood Park around 6:20 p.m., where responding officers encountered multiple individuals with gunshot wounds and a chaotic scene of people fleeing the area.
Among the victims, a 20-year-old individual lost their life, while another person is fighting for their life in a local hospital. The remaining five victims were treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed by police.
During a press conference, Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello stated that investigators are still working to determine the number of shooters involved. “We’re trying to piece together the events of the evening, and that includes speaking with as many witnesses as possible,” he explained.
One eyewitness reported seeing a large crowd of people running from the scene after initially mistaking the gunshots for fireworks. The witness claimed to have looked out their window and seen dozens of people fleeing the area.
