Two individuals who were critically injured during the Notting Hill Carnival in London have succumbed to their injuries, police announced on Saturday that they have passed away.
Cher Maximen, a 32-year-old, was among those who lost their lives. She was attending the carnival with her child, who fortunately was unharmed. A 20-year-old local man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in connection with Maximen’s death.
The Metropolitan Police force also announced the passing of Mussie Imnetu, a 41-year-old chef who was visiting from Dubai. Imnetu was found unconscious in a west London street with a head injury on Monday night. A 31-year-old London man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm, and police are reviewing the charge in light of Imnetu’s death.
The Notting Hill Carnival, a two-day celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture, draws over 1 million attendees each year. The event features vibrant dancers, colorful costumes, and lively music, but unfortunately, it is sometimes marred by violence on the periphery. This year’s event saw eight stabbings and over 300 arrests, mostly for possessing an offensive weapon or drug offenses.
Commander Charmain Brenyah, the police spokesperson for Carnival, expressed sadness at the tragic loss of life and the incidents of serious violence that marred the event.
