Northern California Issues ‘Winter Weather Advisory’ and Highway Closures Due to Alaskan Cold Front

0:00

A cold front from the Gulf of Alaska brought unexpected winter weather to Northern California, causing temperature drops, rain, and snow in the middle of spring. Highway closures and “winter weather advisories” were issued as the storm moved through the region. Snow levels dropped to 2,500 feet above sea level in coastal areas, with the National Weather Service warning of adverse driving conditions and travel delays.

The Bay Area also experienced the impact of the storm, with minor flooding reported on highways, streets, and underpasses. Despite the intense weather, the Bay Area dried up by Sunday morning, marking the end of the brief storm event. Interstate 80 saw heavy snow and multiple spinouts, leading to traffic closures near Lake Tahoe, but lanes were reopened for vehicles equipped with chains or snow tires.

As the storm system moves south towards Southern California, weather officials are predicting lighter rain in the region. Overall, the winter storm is expected to weaken as it progresses towards its end.
