New Landmines Placed in DMZ by North Korea

South Korean military officials have confirmed that North Korea has been planting landmines on roads between the two Koreas and removing streetlights. The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul reported that North Korean soldiers were seen placing landmines on inter-Korean roads within the Demilitarized Zone. This aggressive move is part of a series of actions by North Korea, including declaring South Korea an enemy state and refusing to pursue reunification of the Korean peninsula.

The roads targeted by North Korea have historical significance as they were built during past attempts to ease tensions and promote unity between the two Koreas. Despite efforts by former South Korean President Moon Jae-in to improve relations, including a visit to North Korea in 2018, tensions have escalated in recent years. North Korea has continued to threaten nuclear attacks on South Korea, leading to a closure of the joint liaison office and the mining of roads connecting the two countries.

North Korea’s recent actions, including the development of alleged new military technology and simulated nuclear strikes, indicate a heightened level of aggression. Kim Jong-un has made it clear that he views South Korea as a hostile entity, showing no interest in diplomatic resolutions. The South Korean military is monitoring the situation and preparing to respond to these provocative actions.
