SAN DIEGO — Arrests have been made in connection with the fentanyl overdose death of 31-year-old Connor Gerhart in San Diego last year, involving Micah Seau, a nephew of late NFL Hall of Famer Junior Seau Jr.
On Tuesday, Micah Seau, 31, and Sheri Cavanaugh, 59, pleaded not guilty to murder and conspiracy to commit a crime related to the death of Gerhart on June 1, 2023.
The San Diego District Attorney’s Office asserts that Seau and Cavanaugh provided the fentanyl that led to Gerhart’s fatal overdose.
San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan stated, “These defendants knowingly sold illegal drugs and callously continued distributing this poison in our communities despite the lethal consequences in this case. We, alongside law enforcement partners, remain committed to seeking justice for Connor’s family and friends and holding accountable those responsible for his death.”
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Overdose Response Team initiated an investigation into the case following Gerhart’s death. The investigation detailed the relationship between Seau, Gerhart, and Cavanaugh as long-term friends and associates involved in the illegal drug trade. On May 31, 2023, Seau allegedly purchased fentanyl pills from Cavanaugh and subsequently sold them to Gerhart, resulting in the fatal overdose.
An obituary for Connor Gerhart mentioned his battle with depression, chronic pain from past injuries, and opioid addiction, all contributing to his untimely passing.
Despite Gerhart’s death, Seau and Cavanaugh reportedly discussed further drug transactions, leading to their subsequent arrests on May 31.
A readiness hearing is scheduled for June 12, with potential penalties of 15 years to life in state prison if convicted on all counts.
