Switzerland’s rapper Nemo, who identifies as “non-binary,” emerged as the winner of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest with the song “The Code.” The event took place in Malmö and saw protests against the participation of Russian-Israeli singer Eden Golan. Despite receiving significant public support, Golan finished in fifth place, with Britain’s Olly Alexander receiving zero votes. Nemo made history by becoming the first “non-binary” contestant to win the contest.
In their acceptance speech, Nemo expressed gratitude and emphasized the importance of peace and dignity for all individuals. Another “non-binary” contestant, Bambie Thug from Ireland, also participated in the contest. Golan faced backlash during her performance due to political tensions, with chants of “free Palestine” heard in the audience.
Despite the challenges, Golan secured a fifth-place finish, surpassing Bambie Thug who came in sixth. Israel received significant public support but faced protests throughout the event. Activist Greta Thunberg also made an appearance at the rally in solidarity with the protesters.
