House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is facing a negative approval rating as he tries to gather support from House Democrats to defend his position and prevent a motion to vacate next week. According to the RealClearPolitics poll average, Johnson’s approval rating is at -3.5, with 31.4% unfavorable and 27.6% favorable.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced her intention to move on a motion to vacate Johnson from the Speakership, claiming that he betrayed Republicans by allowing Democrats to take over the House. She specifically pointed out three legislative actions that Johnson supported, which many conservatives opposed.
In response to Greene’s announcement, Johnson condemned her decision, calling the motion wrong for the Republican conference, the institution, and the country. Some establishment Republicans believe Johnson should remain in his position to avoid disrupting the House Republicans’ chance of retaining the majority.
However, some America First Republicans argue that the motion should proceed to hold Johnson accountable for collaborating with Democrats to save his job. It is expected that Democrats, along with some establishment Republicans, will vote to protect Johnson.
Johnson has tried to justify his actions by referencing the November election and insisting that he is doing what he believes is right for the job. Despite his relatively subpar fundraising numbers, Johnson remains steadfast in his position.
