Mother Sue School Board After Student Suspended for Saying ‘Illegal Alien’

Leah McGhee, the mother of a high school student in North Carolina, has filed a lawsuit against her son’s school board after he was suspended for asking about the term “illegal alien.” The incident occurred when her son asked his English teacher to clarify the word “alien,” wondering if it referred to space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards. The school decided to suspend him for three days, causing him to miss important track meets and leading the family to withdraw him from the school.

The lawsuit was filed by the Liberty Justice Center about a month later. McGhee stated that she had tried to resolve the issue privately with the school board for weeks but received no response, leading her to take legal action. Despite facing accusations of racism, she received support from her community and people across the country after speaking at a school board meeting.

Dean McGee, an attorney for the Liberty Justice Center, argued that there was no basis for racism in the word “alien” and called the suspension “outrageous.” He criticized the government for branding McGhee’s son as a racist and denying him education due to the suspension. The lawsuit was filed against Davidson County Schools in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

In response to the situation, Republican state Sen. Steve Jarvis reached out to the school district’s superintendent to find a resolution. The Truth Voices contacted Davidson County Schools for comment, but there has been no response so far.
