Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his displeasure with the “frivolous character assassination” that occurred in the House of Representatives as Democrats ensured he retained his position as speaker.

Johnson hoped that this signaled an end to the personalized politics that has plagued the 118th Congress.

“Hopefully this is the end of the personality politics and the frivolous character assassination that has defined 118th Congress. It’s regrettable.”

163 Democrats voted to prevent Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from attempting to remove Johnson from his role, with Majority Leader Steve Scalise promptly tabling Greene’s motion.

Despite this, there were eleven brave GOP members who voted against this decision. Rep. Thomas Massie remarked that there is now a new dynamic in Congress following the Democrats’ support of Johnson. He highlighted that even Nancy Pelosi and most Republicans voted to retain Johnson as speaker.
