A high school band in Texas has been awarded $15,000 worth of equipment thanks to a generous donation from the iconic rock band Metallica. Boerne High School, located in Kendall County, was selected as one of the winners of Metallica’s “For Whom the Band Tolls” contest, which challenged schools across the U.S. to create performances featuring Metallica songs.

The legendary rock band is giving away nearly $200,000 in equipment to prize winners in various categories. Boerne High School tied with a school in Malverne, New York, for the title of “best performance by a medium-sized high school.”

The students at Boerne created a four-minute medley of Metallica’s most famous songs, including “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Enter Sandman,” “Fade to Black,” “Seek and Destroy,” and “Master of Puppets.” The prize money was used to purchase a new bassline, new instruments for incoming freshmen, and an instrument to provide access to high-quality equipment for students in need.

Other winners of the contest include Auburn University, Eastern New Mexico University, Oakton High School, and Dobyns-Bennett High School. Metallica also awarded fan favorite prizes to Auburn University and Dobyns-Bennett High School.
