Marjorie Taylor Greene’s support for Johnson’s ouster creates tension with fellow MAGA supporters

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is pushing forward with her motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) position, despite opposition from many Republicans, including former President Donald Trump. Greene plans to bring the motion to the floor next week, even though some GOP lawmakers have indicated they will not support it, and Democrats have pledged to block it.

Greene’s decision to proceed with the motion has caused tension within her party, with some allies expressing concerns that it could jeopardize their chances of winning a majority in the next election. Despite this, Greene remains steadfast in her belief that removing Johnson is necessary to secure a House majority.

While Trump has voiced support for Johnson and dismissed the idea of ousting him, Greene argues that her actions will ultimately benefit the former president’s chances in the 2024 election. She believes that Johnson’s support for funding the Department of Justice, which Greene perceives as targeting Trump, necessitates his removal.

Johnson has reiterated his close relationship with Trump and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the speaker of the House and the president. Trump’s backing of Johnson has garnered support from several allies on Capitol Hill, potentially isolating Greene from the former president’s base.

Despite criticism from fellow Republicans, Greene remains committed to her goal of replacing Johnson as speaker. Her persistence has unsettled top party leaders, including House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), who recently engaged in a conversation with Greene about the motion to vacate.

It remains uncertain when the House will vote on the motion, but Democratic leadership has pledged to table it if it reaches the floor, providing Johnson with significant protection. Nonetheless, Greene is undeterred, believing that Democrats thwarting the motion would be detrimental to their own electoral prospects.

As the situation unfolds, Greene continues to champion her cause, unyielding in her belief that removing Johnson is essential for the Republican Party’s success.
