House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) criticized the media for downplaying Hamas’s role in blocking a ceasefire in a recent interview on CNN.
Smith highlighted that Hamas has been the biggest obstacle to a ceasefire, despite reports suggesting otherwise. He mentioned that there was a ceasefire agreement on the table for months, brokered by the President, but Hamas refused to accept it unless Israel met their specific demands.
Smith also pointed out that some reporting, including from The New York Times, misrepresented the situation by incorrectly stating that Hamas had agreed to a ceasefire offer similar to Israel’s preferences. Smith expressed concern that this lack of accurate reporting could hinder progress towards a resolution in the conflict.
