A recent CBS News/YouGov survey found that a majority of voters support efforts to mass deport illegal aliens in the United States. According to the poll, 62 percent of registered voters are in favor of a government program to deport all undocumented immigrants. This includes 88 percent of Republicans, 60 percent of independents, and 38 percent of Democrats.
The survey also revealed that 62 percent of voters support allowing local law enforcement to identify and report undocumented immigrants. However, a slight majority (52 to 48 percent) oppose the establishment of large detention centers to hold individuals while their deportation status is determined.
Voters appear to believe that President Biden’s reelection would exacerbate the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border. Nearly half (49 percent) think a second Biden term would increase the number of illegal border crossings, compared to 5 percent who believe the same if Donald Trump wins in November. Seventy percent believe attempted border crossings will decrease if Trump wins, compared to 20 percent who said the same should Biden win.
Since Biden took office in January 2021, more than 10 million illegal aliens are estimated to have entered the United States, according to the Washington Examiner.
While a majority of voters support efforts to remove undocumented immigrants, mainstream media journalists, who often support Biden’s immigration policies, do not. These journalists have criticized Trump’s campaign pledge to conduct the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history” if elected this November.
For instance, the Daily Beast published an article titled “Trump’s Mass Deportation Plan Is ‘Big Government’ Gone Mad,” in which the author argues that deporting undocumented immigrants contradicts the Republican stance on small government.
Similarly, the Associated Press highlighted plans by the American Civil Liberties Union to file multiple lawsuits against a potential second Trump administration if he proceeds with his mass deportation plans.
