The New York Supreme Court overturned a ban imposed by Nassau County on transgender women participating in girls’ and women’s athletics at county parks.

Judge Francis Ricigliano declared that County Executive Bruce Blakeman did not have the authority to issue such a directive.

Blakeman plans to appeal the decision, criticizing the judge for not addressing the case on its merits.

The New York Civil Liberties Union represented the Long Island Roller Rebels in a lawsuit against the ban, arguing it discriminated against individuals based on gender identity.

The Roller Rebels, a roller derby league, welcomed the court ruling as a victory for transgender participation in sports.

New York Attorney General Letitia James also supported the decision and demanded that Blakeman retract the ban.
