MSNBC’s Joy Reid slammed former President Donald Trump on Tuesday’s “The ReidOut” for suggesting that the rhetoric of President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and other Democrats is to blame for the recent assassination attempts against him.
Reid argued that Trump’s assertion is a classic case of “gaslighting,” a tactic used to manipulate and distort reality. She claimed that Trump’s attempt to shift the blame onto Democrats is a desperate attempt to deflect attention from his own role in fueling the violent rhetoric that has become a hallmark of his presidency.
“It’s a classic case of projection,” Reid said. “Trump is trying to pin the blame for the violent state of our politics on his opponents, while simultaneously using the same kind of inflammatory language that he’s accusing them of using.”
Reid pointed out the hypocrisy in Trump’s statement, in which he claimed that the “highly Regressive language” from Democrats was responsible for the assassination attempt, only to immediately follow it up with his own inflammatory rhetoric. “These people want to destroy our country,” Trump said. “It’s called the enemy from within. They are the real threat.”
Reid accused Trump of trying to erase his own history of using divisive and inflammatory language, which she argued has contributed to the toxic state of American politics. “It’s as if Trump thinks we all have a collective case of amnesia,” she said.
