Israel commemorates first Memorial Day with 620 soldiers killed since October 7

On Sunday evening, Israel observed its traditional Memorial Day by honoring 620 soldiers who have died in battle since the country’s independence in 1948. Memorial Day holds great significance in Israel, a tight-knit society where nearly everyone has a personal connection to a fallen soldier.

The ceremonies on Sunday evening were emotionally charged as the nation remembered those lost in battles on October 7, as well as those who have perished in conflicts against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah on the northern border. Israelis also prayed for the safe return of numerous hostages, including female soldiers, held by Hamas in brutal conditions.

Official Memorial Day events took place at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, where Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi expressed his personal responsibility for the failure to protect citizens on October 7. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised the sacrifices of Arab Israelis during the war.

President Isaac Herzog paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, emphasizing the heroism and strength displayed by the Israeli people during difficult times. The day ended with a call for unity and remembrance as Israel prepared to celebrate Independence Day.

Additionally, the Biden administration officials reached out to their Israeli counterparts in a gesture of solidarity, perhaps in response to President Biden’s decision to withhold arms from Israel during the conflict in Rafah. This decision was widely criticized in Israel, where the battle was seen as necessary for national security.

As Israel mourned its fallen soldiers and prepared to celebrate its independence, the day served as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation’s security and prosperity.
