Iran to Lead UN Human Rights Forum Following Attacks on Israelis by Its Supporters

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is facing criticism for allowing Iran to lead a human rights forum despite their connections to terrorist activities. The 2023 UNHRC Social Forum, scheduled for Nov. 2 and Nov. 3, will be chaired by Iranian ambassador Ali Bahreini. This decision comes after Iran’s support for Hamas, a terrorist group responsible for attacks that resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people in Israel.

Iran has a history of human rights violations, including the killing of hundreds of protestors and providing material support to Hamas. The Iranian government has been designated as a state sponsor of terror by the US Department of State. Despite these troubling actions, Iran continues to lead the upcoming UNHRC event.

Critics, such as human rights lawyer Hillel Neuer, have questioned the UNHRC’s decision to allow Iran to chair a forum on human rights given their track record. Neuer highlighted Iran’s treatment of women and their disregard for basic human rights.

This is not the first time the UN has been criticized for its handling of terrorism. Israeli ambassador Gilad Erdan called for the resignation of the UN Secretary-General after he made controversial remarks minimizing Hamas’ terrorist attacks.

The UNHRC has not responded to requests for comment on the situation.
