Instagram Adds Comments to Stories, Expanding User Interaction

Instagram has introduced a new feature that allows users to engage with each other’s content in a more interactive way. The platform has rolled out comments for Stories, enabling users to leave feedback on their friends’ posts in a more visible and accessible manner.

Unlike the previous system, where responses to Stories were limited to direct messages, this new feature brings comments to the forefront of the platform. According to a Meta spokesperson, “comments live only on your Story,” meaning that the original poster will not receive notifications or see the comments in their direct messages.

Users can toggle comments on and off for individual posts, and only accounts that are followed by the original poster can leave comments. Additionally, comments will be deleted after 24 hours, mirroring the ephemeral nature of Instagram Stories. The profile images of commenters will appear at the bottom of the Story, providing a visual cue that comments are present.

While comments offer a new way to interact with Stories, users can still choose to respond to posts via direct message if the account is set to accept those messages. Furthermore, users can swipe left on a comment and tap the DM icon to send a direct message in response to a comment.
