Problems persist at the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation regarding the timely issuance of professional licenses. The agency was supposed to enter into a contract with a technology vendor by March 7 to develop a new computer software system in order to expedite the process.
The IDFPR oversees licenses for a wide range of professions, including nurses, barbers, roofers, social workers, and dentists. With over 1 million people in Illinois requiring a professional license or registration to work, delays in obtaining these licenses are causing frustration among applicants.
During a recent hearing, Holly Woodruff of the Illinois Nurses Association highlighted how nurses are often left in limbo after completing their exams. She noted that the wait for their licenses can be particularly stressful, especially when student loan payments are looming. Woodruff also mentioned that Illinois is losing skilled medical professionals to neighboring states due to these delays.
State Representative Bob Morgan emphasized that the delays in issuing licenses have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only individuals but also the economy and healthcare system of the state. The acting director of the agency attributed much of the delays to a backlog that has accumulated over the years.
Despite Governor J.B. Pritzker’s request for a 20% increase in funding for the agency, there are concerns about a significant budget shortfall in the proposed 2025 budget. This shortfall could further complicate efforts to address the ongoing issues with license issuance in Illinois.
