Ibiza’s Environmental Department has launched an investigation into pop star Katy Perry’s music video for her song “Lifetimes,” amid allegations that the production team damaged protected sand dunes on the Spanish island.
According to local authorities, Perry’s team failed to obtain the necessary permits to film on the island, specifically in the restricted area of the S’Espalmador dunes, which are part of the Ses Salines Natural Park. The department stated that filming is allowed with the proper permissions, but in this case, no authorization was requested.
The music video, which features Perry partying with friends on the coast and dancing at a beachfront club, has raised concerns among Ibiza’s authorities, who are now investigating whether any damage was caused to the protected area. The S’Espalmador dunes are considered a plot of land with great ecological value to the islands and are preserved for that reason.
The island where the filming took place is uninhabited and can only be accessed by private boat, adding to the concerns about the potential damage caused by the production team. Ibiza’s government is now working to determine whether any harm was done to the environment during the filming of the music video.
This investigation comes on the heels of criticism Perry faced last month for her song “Woman’s World,” which was met with negative reviews on social media. The song was seen as a misstep by some fans, who felt it was a poorly executed attempt at a feminist anthem. The backlash against Perry’s music has been swift, with some outlets calling the song “plain bad” and criticizing its lyrics and beat as “devastatingly reductive.”
