House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) is seeking donations from supporters as he faces backlash over President Joe Biden’s assertion of executive privilege regarding tapes of special counsel Robert Hur’s interview with the president.
In an email obtained by the Truth Voices, Comer alleges that Biden and his team are “terrified” of the audio recordings from the interview, which focus on Biden’s handling of classified documents and raise questions about his mental state. Comer appeals to supporters for donations to defend against attacks from Democrats.
The fundraising email follows the Justice Department’s announcement that Biden has invoked executive privilege over the recordings, obstructing House Republicans who are fighting for access. The House Judiciary and House Oversight committees have passed contempt resolutions for Attorney General Merrick Garland in response to the executive privilege claim, which they view as a politically motivated move.
Comer, along with Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and other GOP lawmakers, believes that the audio recordings could reveal insights into Biden’s cognitive abilities. They argue that Hur’s report on the classified documents investigation suggested Biden’s memory issues and inability to serve effectively as president.
Democrats counter these claims by accusing Republicans of seeking the audio recordings for political purposes, such as using them in campaign ads or exploiting Biden’s stutter to discredit him.
Despite the partisan divide, the controversy surrounding the tapes continues to escalate, with Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) even reading Comer’s fundraising email during an Oversight Committee hearing. The fundraising email has become a focal point in the ongoing debate over executive privilege and transparency in government.
