Missouri Governor Enacts Law Prohibiting Use of Taxpayer Money for Abortion Providers

Missouri Governor Mike Parson signed a bill into law that prohibits abortion providers and their affiliates from receiving Medicaid reimbursements. This bill, known as HB 2634, ensures that no public funds can be directed to facilities that offer abortions or their affiliates. Previously, the state’s Uninsured Women’s Health Program allowed MO HealthNet participants, including abortion providers, to receive funds. The bill, sponsored by State Rep. Cody Smith, aims to defund Planned Parenthood entirely.

Governor Parson stated that this legislation reinforces the state’s commitment to not support abortion providers with taxpayer dollars. He emphasized the administration’s pro-life stance and commitment to ending elective abortions in the state. Democrats criticized the move as extreme and a harsh attack on reproductive freedom.

Planned Parenthood chapters in Missouri expressed disappointment in the decision, citing the negative impact on thousands of Missourians who rely on the organization for essential health services. Groups like Missourians for Constitutional Freedom and the ACLU are actively working to challenge the state’s abortion ban through voter initiatives.
