Former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Seeks California Governor’s Seat Again

California’s 2026 gubernatorial race is taking shape, with former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D) announcing his candidacy. This marks Villaraigosa’s second attempt at the governor’s seat, after falling short in the 2018 Democratic primary. In that election, he spent almost $35 million, only to come in third place behind Republican John Cox, who spent a mere $6.6 million.

Villaraigosa’s political career has been marked by significant moments, including his role as host of the 2012 Democratic National Convention. During the event, he faced fierce opposition from delegates when he pushed through a floor vote to restore pro-Israel language to the party platform. The move was seen as a significant departure from the party’s growing anti-Israel sentiment, which has only intensified in recent years.

Today, the party’s presumptive nominee, Kamala Harris, has been criticized for her reluctance to publicly associate with Israel’s elected prime minister, underscoring the depth of the divide. Villaraigosa’s decision to enter the 2026 race will likely be closely watched, as he seeks to capitalize on his experience and reputation to win the governorship.
