Former US Labor Secretary in the Bill Clinton administration, Robert Reich, has sounded the alarm on Elon Musk, labeling him “out of control” and advocating for measures to rein him in. In a scathing opinion piece published in the Guardian, Reich argued that Musk’s influence has grown too vast, and his actions on his platform, X, have become increasingly problematic.
Reich specifically took issue with the spread of “misinformation” on X, which he believes Musk has allowed to flourish. To address this, Reich proposed several solutions, including a boycott of Tesla, one of Musk’s flagship companies.
Furthermore, Reich suggested that regulators worldwide should take a firmer stance against Musk, even going so far as to threaten him with arrest if he fails to curb the dissemination of “lies and hate” on his platform.
In a broader critique of Musk’s potential influence on the 2024 US presidential election. Reich has previously expressed his disdain for former President Donald Trump, who is expected to run again. In a June social media post, Reich argued that Trump should be disqualified from running due to his alleged role in the January 6 insurrection, citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
Reich’s comments come on the heels of the recent arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France, which Musk responded to by expressing concerns about traveling to countries where free speech may not be constitutionally protected.
