Foreign leaders have condemned the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, with some blaming the Biden Administration for creating an environment that allowed the attack to occur. Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that while the attempt was not organized by the current authorities, the atmosphere surrounding Trump’s candidacy “provoked what America is confronting today.”
Peskov’s remarks echoed those of several Republicans, who have accused the Democratic Party of inciting violence through their rhetoric. They claim that labeling Trump a “dictator” and a “threat to democracy” has created a toxic environment that can lead to violence.
The Kremlin also criticized the lack of heightened security measures for Trump, given the numerous threats he has faced. “After numerous attempts to remove candidate Trump from the political arena – using first legal tools, the courts, prosecutors, attempts to politically discredit and compromise the candidate – it was obvious to all outside observers that his life was in danger,” Peskov said.
A bullet grazed Trump’s ear during the rally in Pennsylvania, just missing his head. Biden has announced an investigation into the security apparatus. When asked whether the attack would affect the November election, Peskov stated that Russia has no desire to interfere and that it is a U.S. matter.
Meanwhile, other world leaders have reacted to the attempted assassination. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack and wished Trump a quick recovery. Trump is set to attend the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where he will be officially nominated as the GOP presidential nominee.
