Family of Slain Chicago Cop Calls for Mayor Brandon Johnson and Gov. J.B. Pritzker to Stay Away from Funeral

The family of a Chicago police officer who was tragically killed demanded that Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker stay away from his funeral as the search for his killer continues. Officer Luis M. Huesca, 30, was shot and killed while driving home from work. He was still in uniform when fellow officers found him with multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect, Xavier L. Tate Jr., is being sought by authorities, with rewards totaling $100,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Despite plans for Mayor Johnson and other politicians to attend the funeral, the family made it clear that they did not want them there. Huesca’s mother expressed that she did not want the mayor to attend, as she believed he did not support the police. While the mayor initially intended to attend, he eventually decided to respect the family’s wishes and did not show up.

Additionally, the chief administrator of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability was asked to leave the wake after showing up. The family’s wishes were clear, and they wanted to ensure that their son was honored and remembered in the right way.
