Tom Emmer strives to strengthen ties with Trump following speaker controversy

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) is working to mend his relationship with Donald Trump following the former president’s opposition to his bid for speaker last fall. Initially, Emmer hoped for Trump to remain neutral after his first choice for speaker, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), encountered obstacles. However, Trump criticized Emmer due to perceived offenses and his moderate stance within House leadership, leading Emmer to withdraw and clearing the path for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to assume the role after weeks of turmoil.

Since then, Emmer, as the third-ranking Republican in the House, has taken steps to bridge the gap between him and Trump. He attended a Pennsylvania event for Trump in April and is set to co-host a Minnesota GOP dinner featuring the former president later this month. Notably, Emmer endorsed Trump’s presidential candidacy in January, contrasting his hesitation to do so in October and his decision to certify the 2020 election results post the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, which Trump criticized, labeling him a “RINO.”

Emmer has been actively demonstrating his support for Trump, including becoming the Minnesota chairman for Trump’s 2024 campaign after hosting a fundraiser for him at Mar-a-Lago. This move has raised speculation about Emmer’s aspirations to lead the House Republican Conference in the future. Despite past votes, such as his endorsement of gay marriage, Emmer has showcased a shift towards the right to garner favor among the GOP base.

Although some in Trump’s circle remain wary of Emmer’s intentions, favorability towards him among colleagues is generally high, given his successful whip operation and fundraising prowess. Patching up his relationship with Trump could potentially secure the necessary support from the MAGA Right, crucial for any future leadership ambitions.

Emmer’s journey to win over Trump and consolidate his position within the party serves as a cautionary tale for Republicans who find themselves at odds with the former president. As the GOP navigates ahead of the November election, the dynamic between congressional leaders and Trump’s influence continues to shape the party’s trajectory.
