Republican House Conference Chair Elise Stefanik from New York called on the Justice Department to investigate the actions of “Biden special counsel Jack Smith” for allegedly interfering in the presidential election by prosecuting former President Donald Trump. Trump could face up to 450 years in federal prison if convicted on the 40 charges related to election interference.
Stefanik sent a letter to the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility to review Smith’s handling of the case involving Trump. She accused Smith of trying to influence the 2024 election by pursuing legal action against Trump before the election.
Stefanik pointed out that Smith’s actions went against the DOJ’s policies, which prohibit prosecutors from timing their actions to influence elections. She highlighted how Smith continued to file court documents even after a stay was imposed on the proceedings.
In a statement, Stefanik emphasized the need for an ethics investigation into Smith’s conduct, suggesting that his actions were politically motivated to impact the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. She also shared her official ethics complaint on Twitter.
